A fire broke out on navy frigate HMCS Toronto in Halifax Harbour Wednesday evening.
Maj. Mark Gough, spokesman for Maritime Forces Atlantic, said the cause of the fire is still not known and an investigation is currently underway.
Gough said the fire was reported on the vessel’s starboard funnel. The frigate is currently docked at HMC Dockyard in Halifax.
“The ship’s company responded immediately to attempt to put out the fire and the CFB Halifax Fire Department was called as well,” said Gough. “The fire department arrived on the scene within minutes and the fire was effectively extinguished by 7:10 p.m.”
No one was injured, he said.
He said some damage had been done to the ship, but the extent is still being determined.
HMCS Toronto recently returned from Operation Reassurance in Europe and is currently undergoing routine maintenance following its six-month deployment.
Peter Ziobrowski, author of the online blog Halifax Shipping News, said he learned of the fire through a Halifax/Dartmouth ferry captain at about 7 p.m.
A photo of the frigate tweeted by The Rex Report Wednesday evening appeared to show a small amount of smoke coming from the middle of the vessel.
The Twitter page Halifax Fire News tweeted that the fire had been reported at 6:54 and that it had been extinguished quickly.
