An off-duty Halifax Regional Police officer is facing charges after an alleged sexual assault at a residence in Tantallon on Wednesday.

Just before 2 p.m., RCMP arrested Const. Joseph Farrow, 51-year-old man from Hammonds Plains, after a report of an unwanted person, Cpl. Lisa Croteau said in an emailed statement.

The investigation was turned over to the province's Serious Incident Response Team.

Farrow was charged with unlawfully entering a home and sexually assaulting the owner, a person known to him, SIRT said in a news release. He was held in police custody overnight and was slated to appear in Halifax provincial court Thursday.

“The officer has been suspended with pay in accordance with the Nova Scotia Police Act,” Halifax Regional Police said in a news release.

Farrow has been a member of the Halifax Regional Police for 23 years.

SIRT investigates all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, under the direction and control of independent civilian director Felix Cacchione.
