SCOTSBURN, N.S. — On a hot and muggy Sunday afternoon 12 teams of two registered and had great fun competing for prizes at the first Annual Washer Toss Tournament sponsored by the Scotsburn Recreation Club at the soccer field by Scotsburn Elementary School.
Free ice cream and complimentary ice-cold water kept the 24 players and six volunteers in good spirits as they enjoyed the fresh air. There were door prizes for every team which were drawn throughout the afternoon as well as good music broadcast over the eight washer toss courts. Games were played to 15 points in round robin format which enabled all teams to play all of the others.
In the end the “Back Benchers” (Ryan Taylor and Siobhan Melanson) from Plymouth Park finished first with a perfect 11-win 0-loss record, followed by the “Papa D’s” (Darrell and Michelle MacNeil) for silver with a 10-win 1-loss record. The bronze winner had to be decided by playoff as the “Rips” were tied with the “Toney River Tossers” (Sara Grant and Lisa Bain-Gratto) both with 8-win 3-loss records. But the Rips (Mike and Madison Ripley) finally prevailed to win bronze and close out the afternoon.
Organizers thanked the Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education for allowing use of the school field as well as the Scotsburn Fire Department for the use of awnings, freezer and tables. The SRC volunteers who planned and organized the inaugural event were Eric Wilson, Rae Gunn, Katie Gunn, Jarret McNeill, Jessica Dunphy and Troy MacDonald. They are already looking forward to the next tournament. For information about ongoing programs at SRC check out Scotsburn Recreation Club Facebook page.
