BARNEYS RIVER STATION, N.S. — A 19-year-old Trenton man has been charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death in a Barneys River car crash that killed two women.
According to the RCMP, Devon Michael Dewtie was driving through Barneys River when the mattress he was transporting on his car roof flew off onto the road.
As a result, a transport truck lost control on the treacherous stretch of Highway 104 between Antigonish and New Glasgow, crossed the centreline and collided with a car, RCMP said in a news release.
The car’s two female occupants, aged 51 and 74, were both killed.
Dewtie was arrested at a home in Greenwood without incident and charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death. He appeared in Pictou provincial court Tuesday and was released on conditions.
He is scheduled to appear in Pictou provincial court at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 12.
