PICTOU, N.S. — A barge that accidentally flipped and dropped its load of boulders and an excavator into the Pictou Harbour, is expected to be removed soon.

The incident is believed to have happened sometime in the evening or early morning of Sept. 28-29.

The cause for the accident is unknown.

“The contractor, Balodis Inc. has confirmed to PSPC that a verification was made, and all the material and equipment was properly secured on the barge,” said Mario Morneau with Public Services and Procurement Canada.

The barge was bound for Pictou Island where improvements are being made to the harbour.

Upon discovery of the incident Balodis Inc., surrounded the area around the barge with an oil boom, and both the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and PSPC have confirmed that there was no oil spill or other contaminants spilled in the water.

Balodis assumed responsibility for the removal of the excavator which was done on Oct. 2, and removal of the boulders is expected to be completed in early Nov. 2019.

The owner of the barge, Superport Marine Services Ltd. is also scheduled to have the barge removed at the same time.
