NEW GLASGOW – Imagine driving down the street and suddenly the interior of your vehicle is filling up with smoke.
Doug Dort has some simple advice for people whose car catches on fire: don’t fight it.
“It’s only a vehicle – get away from it. It’ll probably be written off by the insurance company, anyway,” says the New Glasgow Fire Department chief.
Just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, firefighters were called to Marsh Street in New Glasgow, where a car suddenly went ablaze
By the time firefighters arrived, the car was engulfed in flames and thick, black smoke was billowing into the sky.
“It appears an electrical fire started it,” say Dort, explaining that the driver of the car noticed smoke rolling out from behind the drivers’ side door paneling.
“He pulled over, got out and it went up in flames. It burned up pretty quick. There are so many carcinogens in the plastics.”
Firefighters had to remain on the scene for about an hour, to ensure that the street was adequately covered with salt, so that the water used, to put out the blaze didn’t result in slippery road conditions.
There were no injuries.
