NEW GLASGOW, N.S. — NEW GLASGOW, N.S.
A single rose, some chocolates and a song.
That’s what The Vocal Chords can bring you every Valentine’s Day.
The four-man a cappella group is once again turning Valentine’s Day into an opportunity to raise money for various causes. For just $25, on Feb. 14, they will visit your significant other – or even a parent or friend – and present them with a rose, chocolates and entertaining songs.
“People who want to hire us can call the Valentine Hotline,” said group member Art Bingham, who sings bass for The Vocal Chords.
The Valentine Hotline phone number is 902-921-3386.
Other members include Brian Bowden (lead), Peter Townsend (tenor) and Bob Morse (baritone).
“I don’t know how many years it’s been with this configuration, probably three or four,” says Bingham, “but it actually goes back into the ’80s. We’re all former barber-shoppers and we just carry on with the tradition. We have a lot of fun with it.”
In previous years, they’ve taken as many as 30 “orders” for Valentine’s Day and even workplaces aren’t off limits – hospitals, banks and corporate offices can get in on the fun, too. All the money raised goes to charities hand-picked by members of the group.
“We have three standard songs that we do sing,” says Bowden, listing them off: My Wild Irish Rose, Let Me Call You Sweetheart and The Story of the Rose, also known as Heart of my Heart.
