Housing units at Hemlock Avenue are still without power after a tree fell across the trailer park’s only road in and out community.
“There’s zero emergency access to the community right now,” says property owner Blair van Veld. “Eleven out of the twelve homes in the upper section of the community are lived in by seniors. It’s totally unacceptable.”
“This is a seniors' park and we’re trapped,” said Fraser Murphy, another resident of Hemlock Hill.
The fallen tree also damaged near-by powerlines and so the park has had the power out since 4:00 a.m. yesterday. Nova Scotia Power says that its crews are assessing areas where there have been outages, the level of damage and requirements to repair it. Residents across Pictou County have been hit hard by the high winds and snow that pummeled the region. Of the 22,286 customers in Stellarton and the surrounding area without power, more than 14,000 are still in the dark.
"It's not just that the power is out," said Murphy, pointing to a near-by home. "The gentleman that lives there was in the ICU last week, and there's others in their 80s with breathing problems. This is an emergency."
There are between 13 and 14 people living in the community.
"Stellarton, Amherst, and Tatamaouche are the three areas where we're seeing the remainder of the outages," Tiffany Chase, Nova Scotia Power spokesperson.
Nova Scotia Power says that it expects power to be restored by no later than 11:30 p.m. Nov. 30.
Update: Nova Scotia power crews were on the site and have removed the fallen tree. The provincial Emergency Mancagement Office has been notified that plows can safely access the location.
