Annie Myrtle Macdermott

MacDermott (McKinley), Annie Myrtle Annie Myrtle MacDermott – New Glasgow. Died October 1 at the Admiral LTCC, Dartmouth. Born October 6, 1924, in Alma West, NB she was the daughter of Edwin and Violet McKinley. After graduating from high school, she worked for Dr. Moss, an optometrist and jeweller in Amherst and then for the T. Eaton Co. in Moncton. She met her husband, Ralph, in 1946 when he was leading a team surveying what is now Fundy National Park. The village of Alma West was located within the boundaries of the park and required some 40 families to be moved from there into the village of Alma. Ann's childhood home was skidded, foot by foot, onto a lot in Alma. The move took place over a period of weeks and Ann often spoke of not knowing where their house would be by the end of day. Ann, Ralph and their sons and families spent many summers vacationing in Fundy Park. It was a family joke that Ann had been born on the #2 fairway of the golf course. Probably why she always had an affinity for the game. After their marriage they moved to Plaster Rock, NB where their 2 sons grew up. Ann was a member of the United Church and active with the United Church Women where she was known for her baking and pot luck dishes. In 1966 they moved to New Glasgow when Ralph took a position with Scott Paper. They were members of Trinity United Church. They built a home on Chelsea Court where Ann lived for over 50 years until she moved to the nursing home in Dartmouth where she was closer to her son and daughter-in-law. Ann was the last of her generation of McKinley/MacDermotts. She was predeceased by Ralph, her husband of 52 years; her brother, Russell and his wife, Ladona (Wilbur) McKinley; in-laws, Marjorie (MacDermott) Johnson, and husband Leo Johnson and Neil MacDermott and wife Marie (Totten) MacDermott. She is survived by her sons, Graham (Bonnie) of Dartmouth and David (Adeline) of Edmonton; four grandchildren, Angus of Ottawa, Caitlin MacDermott Stretch (Terrance) of Calgary, Kevin (Alexa) of Edmonton and Matthew (Catherine) of Edmonton; two great-grandchildren, Grace and Karl; and two step-great-grandchildren, Samantha and Cole Stretch. Cremation has taken place and a private burial will be held in Alma, NB. Many thanks to the staff of The Admiral LTCC where Ann received such wonderful care.
