Douglas Smith — Edmonton

Douglas ‘Doug’ Smith, age 69, of Edmonton, Alberta, formerly of Central West River, Pictou County, passed away peacefully on June 11th at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Alberta. He was the son of the late Dwight and Isabel (Gould) Smith of Central West River. Doug spent his early life in Central West River before moving to Edmonton, Alberta, where he pursued a degree in special education at the University of Alberta. He then worked for many years teaching Aboriginal students and developed a keen interest in Native customs and culture. He had a passion for travel, photography and country music as well as raising and showing award winning Old English sheepdogs across the Western Region. He will always be remembered as someone with great insight and a fun-loving personality. Doug is survived by his wife, Linda Smith; and sons; Dwight Delbert (Del) Smith and Jeff Henker (Mariana Ledda); his 3 granddaughters; Alanna, Valentina, and Hanna. Also left to remember Doug are his sister, Joan (John) Wack, and brother, Larry (Jean) Smith and many nieces and nephews. As well as his parents, Doug is predeceased by his sister, Carol Harris (Wilfred). A private memorial was held earlier this month in Edmonton, AB. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
