Francis Deyoung

Francis John DeYoung passed away peacefully on May 25, 2018 at Glen Haven Manor at the age of 91. Prior to moving to Havenbrook Manor, Riverton in 2011, he resided on Little Harbour Road, New Glasgow. He was born in New Glasgow on Nov 14, 1926 to the late John DeYoung and Cecelia (Young). Francis was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) of 55 years, sisters Liz Odo, Mary Dunbar, Angus Doucette, Isabel MacLeod, and son-in-law John Laureijs. He is survived by his daughter Janice Laureijs and sons David (Lily), and Christopher. Grandchildren Richard, Stephen and Peter Laureijs, Beth (Blair) Mountain and Jonathan DeYoung and Great Grandchildren, Lily and Ana Mountain. Family was a number one priority for Francis, and he was always there for them. After his early years as a mechanic, Francis became one of the few Watchmaker/Jewelers in Pictou County. He had a downtown business on Provost Street which he later moved to his home for 50 years. He and his wife Betty were known for their beautiful pair skating and were regulars among the skating crowds. They also loved to attend dances and community/church suppers throughout the county and enjoyed their camping excursions. Francis was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman and hunter and acted as a professional guide. As a member of the Overseas War Veterans, Francis built a parade float which he towed proudly during Canada Day and other special events in Pictou County and Antigonish. He was a long-time member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church. Francis' family would like to sincerely thank the 2nd floor staff at Glen Haven Manor for their kind and patient care, as well as the staff at Havenbrook Manor for their support during his six years there. By his request, there will be no visitation. A private family committal will be held at St. John's Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
