Joel Bernard Matheson

Joel Bernard Matheson
MATHESON, Joel Bernard Joel Bernard Matheson, born September 14, 1990, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2019 at age 28, after he sustained severe injuries during an accident. Originally from Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Joel spent the last number of years living and working in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Despite the distance, home never felt far away as Joel had many people he considered family close by. He worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for North American Construction Group and was well respected by all of his co-workers. Joel’s dedication and passion for his work was recently recognized as he was on his way to becoming a foreman. As a fearless adventure-seeker and outdoors lover, Joel was always ready for new experiences. He grew up riding horses, fishing, four-wheeling and gravitated towards anything with wheels. He also enjoyed skateboarding, snowboarding and whatever gave him a thrill. He most recently traded wheels for waves when he learned to surf during a trip to California. Joel loved life and lived it to the fullest, but nothing compared to the love he had for his family and friends. Joel was a selfless, genuine guy who deeply cared about all of the people in his life and would do anything for them; he has literally given others the shirt off his back countless times. These qualities, paired with his thrill-driven and fun-loving nature, are what made Joel such a special person and a friend to so many. We have lost a partner, son, brother, and friend; an infectious smile, a contagious laugh, and a magnetic personality. Although Joel’s life ended far before its time, he was able to experience many joys, including standing next to his best friend on his wedding day in 2016. This was also where Joel met the love of his life, Chantelle Walsh, who stayed by his side from the moment she met him until the very end. Joel has had a profound impact on the hearts of everyone who knew him; his spirit and zest for life are unforgettable. His generosity continued after he found peace. Through organ donation, Joel has given a number of others a second chance at life. It is our hope that these recipients, and all who knew Joel, will carry his adventurous and fun-loving spirit with them as they move forward. We will honour and celebrate Joel’s life in Pictou County, Nova Scotia at a later date.
