Last week truckers lined the highway to ask the government to give Northern Pulp an extension “to keep working until they get everything straightened out.”
I would like to ask those who support an extension for Northern Pulp three questions:
1. By supporting an extension for Northern Pulp, you are asking the government to break its promise to the people of Pictou Landing First Nation to close Boat Harbour for effluent treatment in January 2020. Why do you think it is right for the government to break this promise to the people of Pictou Landing First Nation?
2. Who do you think is responsible for Northern Pulp not being able to meet the deadline to stop using Boat Harbour?
3. Why did you decide to ask the government to break its promise to the people of Pictou Landing First Nation, rather than asking the government to develop a transition plan that would help your industry adapt if Northern Pulp closes temporarily or permanently?
I completely understand that forestry industry workers are worried about their future. What I cannot accept is asking that the community of Pictou Landing First Nation pay the price for Northern Pulp being so far behind schedule.
