I work for the Town of New Glasgow as a crossing guard at the corner of Albert Street and MacLean Street. I cross about 60 children in the morning and more in the afternoon.

The sidewalk is like a skating rink in the morning, and when we had snow, it covered the sidewalks in front of the school and from MacLean Street up to near the school.

Both of these are not fit for the children to walk on, so I have to take them out on to the main road. Some vehicles think the road is a race track. Some ignore the stop sign, and when I am taking the children, they go around me and the child.

It is a scary situation.

Car bumpers touch my legs. I could hit the car with my sign, but I would be charged.

Diane Wilsack,

New Glasgow Crossing Guard
