55+ Plus games gearing up for Antigonish this summer

ANTIGONISH, N.S. – The 55+ plus athletes will head to Antigonish this summer for the Nova Scotia games.

The games are held every two years, and this year will take place from July 31 until Aug. 3.

“The Games are early this year, primarily to allow us to take full advantage of Saint Francis Xavier University, as the university will be headquarters with many of the games being held there,” said Bob MacLeod, a Pictou County resident who is past-president of both the Canada and Nova Scotia 55+ Games committees, as well as the current 55+ Games director for Pictou County.

“Also, we can book university accommodations and their food services will be available to us as well.”
The 2015 Games were held in New Glasgow and attracted more than 800 competitors.

Events being offered this year are Women’s and Men’s hockey, Track & Field, Mountain biking, Pickleball, Golf, Bowling, 8 ball pool, Darts, Tennis, Cribbage, 45’s, Crokinole, Scrabble, Washer toss, Contract & Duplicate Bridge, Skip-Bo, Swimming, Curling, Soccer , Slo-pitch, 5 & 10 km runs and 3 “try it sports”: Disc golf, Geocaching and Rowing.

Curling will be held but at a later date (Oct. 17-19).

In addition to opening and closing ceremonies, there will be a banquet and a ceilidh hosted by Celtic musical artist Bruce Guthro.
