Five local boxers to compete at a Saint John card this weekend

Five fighters from the Albion Amateur Boxing Club will hit the road to Saint John, N.B., this coming weekend.

Carson Scholes, Ethan Pratt, Jonathan Hay, Shauna Fukes and Ryan Perry will all be boxing on the Saturday night card, which will be the last competitive matches for the Albion crew until January, when they fight at a card in Halifax.

Fukes, who fought an exhibition at Summer Street Industries in New Glasgow on Nov. 18, will be making her second foray into the ring, although this one will be a legit fight and not an exhibition match.

A lot of them are new (to the competitive arena), said Albion club president and coach Jim Worthen of the contingent that will be going to Saint John.

Shauna, Ethan and Ryan all had their first fights at our show in November, and Carson is having his first fight on Saturday.

The card will be held at Exhibition Park in the southern New Brunswick city.

Its always a sold-out event in Saint John, a really big show. Were looking forward to some really good fights (and) well be boxing all New Brunswick opponents.

Next week, Albion boxer Matt Fraser will be leaving for Dublin, Ireland, to spend four days training with – and in one case, boxing against – members of the Irish national team.

He will have one fight over there, Worthen said, adding that in the past, former Albion boxers such as Steve MacKay, Tommy Worthen and Matt Maclennan have travelled to the Emerald Isle for training and bouts.

A bronze medallist at the 2017 Canadian amateur boxing championships, the 16-year-old Fraser is also a member of the provincial core team that is working toward the 2019 Canada Games in Red Deer, Alta.

He will be travelling with (Canada Games head coach) Wayne Gordon and three other boxers from Nova Scotia. Matt is going to have a great international experience.
