TRENTON – The Albion Boxing Club sent two boxers to fight exhibitions at a card in Saint John on Nov. 17.

Sophie LeBlanc, 10, fought a Fun Box match with Tessa Scott of Saint John.

“She boxed a good fight,” said Albion president Jim Worthen.

“The only difference between Fun Box and regular boxing is that there are no judges, but the roughness, and the punching and the skills, it’s all the same.”

Meanwhile, Tyver Stewart, 15, also fought an exhibition; it was originally intended to be a regular bout, but Stewart’s opponent, Bohan Durantyh, failed to make weight in the scheduled 51K match.

“It was still a great experience for Tyver,” Worthen said. “It was a good, tough fight. (Durantyh) is a national level boxer and that’s where Tyver wants to be.”

The Nov. 17 card, hosted by the Saint John Golden Gloves Club, was that club’s 50th anniversary card.

The Albion club had originally planned their traditional November card for that date, but Worthen’s club has a long history with the Saint John club and wanted to support their 50th. The Albion Boxing Club won’t host a card until next May.

“I’ve been working with that club for 31 years,” he added. “Joe Blanchard runs it now and I’ve worked with his father Eddie and grandfather Steve. I have a lot of respect for that family and we wanted to go up and support that card and be a part of it.”

Stewart, LeBlanc and fellow Albion club members Cynthia Denny and Carson Scholes will take part in a card on Nov. 23 at the Best Western Glengarry in Truro.
