While the exact numbers have yet to be tallied, organizer Tom Steele said that at least $8,000 has been raised, which will be split between the Play With the Pros initiative, which helps youth with hockey registration costs, as well as the YMCA of Pictou County’s Strong Kids campaign.

“We had 50 kids on the ice for the three-on-three,” Steele added.

“The players always love giving back and meeting with the kids and the kids are always excited and enthusiastic.”

The young players received jerseys and commemorative medals, and also had a chance to get autographs from their heroes following the game.

“Brad (Marchand) has been great to support is for the last number of years,” Steele said.

Hockey luminaries in attendance include Marchand, Colin White, Brent Turnbull, Dave MacIntyre, Blayre Turnbull and Lane Cormier – who was recently invited to the Islanders’ tryout camp.

“We had great guys like Andrew (MacDonald) and Brad (Marchand) here,” said Sim, who is good friends with MacDonald with the two having been teammates for four seasons with the New York Islanders.

“They are great people who come out to support us.”

Steele said that each year, at least 30 minor hockey players in Pictou County receive financial assistance for registration costs.
