NEW?GLASGOW - One of the Toronto Maple Leafs' most recognizable leaders is coming to Pictou County. Wendel Clark was announced yesterday as the marquee quest for the 2009 Scott Weeks Celebrity Golf Tournament.
"We are privileged this 15-season veteran of the NHL and one of the most beloved players in Toronto Maple Leaf history will be our guest this year," said Marty Malcolm, co-chairman of this year's event, in a release.
As in the past, many Maritime hockey personalities will be profiled at this event, all of whom have played at the college, major junior and professional level.
They include local favourite Lowell MacDonald and Weeks Major Midgets alumni Colin White, Jon Sim, Derek Walser and Joey MacDonald.
Past marquee celebrities have included Jean Beliveau,Yvan Courneyor, Bobby Hull, Brad Park, Gerry Cheevers, Lanny MacDonald, Doug Gilmour, Mike Bossy, Darrell Sittler, Al MacInnis and Marcel Dionne.
"This golf tournament is the foundation of the Scott Weeks Bursary Program, which has provided financial support to 48 members of our Weeks Alumni family," said Wade Taylor, president of the Weeks Hockey Organization. Last year, five $1750 bursaries were awarded to current and former Weeks Major Midget and Junior A Crushers players who have demonstrated athletic and academic excellence and social responsibility.
The event will take place July 16 and 17 at Abercrombie Golf and Country Club.
