The push and pull between the Cape Breton Eagles and Halifax Mooseheads is still ongoing.
One night after the Mooseheads got the best of the Eagles in Halifax, the script got flipped in Sydney on Saturday. The Eagles beat the Mooseheads 5-1 in front of 3,665 fans at Centre 200 to restore their control of the season series with four wins in five head-to-head meetings.
The power play made the biggest difference for the Eagles, who converted three of their seven chances. The Mooseheads went 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
Shawn Boudrias led Cape Breton with two goals and one assist and Derek Gentile and Egor Sokolov each had a goal and an assist. Mathias Laferriere also scored for the Eagles and Raphael Lavoie had the Mooseheads goal. Maxim Trepanier and Bo Groulx drew the assists on the scoring play to extend their respective points streaks to 15 and 14 games. They are the longest active streaks in the QMJHL.
Kevin Mandolese stopped 34 shots for Cape Breton and Alexis Gravel made 21 saves for Halifax.
Cape Breton improves to 17-11-1-1 and Halifax falls to 14-13-2-1.
The Mooseheads' next game is on Wednesday on the road against the Charlottetown Islanders.
Notes: Senna Peeters, Samuel Dube, Justin Barron and Marcel Barinka did not play for Halifax. ... Groulx, Lavoie and Mooseheads defenceman Jared McIsaac will leave for the Canadian world junior team tryout camp in Oakville, Ont., on Monday.
