Playing with a skeleton crew did not hold the Halifax Mooseheads back in Charlottetown on Wednesday.
The Mooseheads beat the Islanders 4-1 at the Eastlink Centre, even with a half dozen key players out of their lineup.
"It was a really big team win," said Halifax head coach J.J. Daigneault. "When you're depleted like that with guys away and some injuries, it's an opportunity for the guys coming in. A situation like ours gives guys a chance to play and basically what we did tonight is we rolled four lines.
"Everyone was going out for 45 or 50 seconds and they played with pace and they also played the right way. The kids played very well and our defence did a great job too."
Mooseheads veterans Jared McIsaac, Bo Groulx and Raphael Lavoie are all at the Canadian world junior team selection camp, Marcel Barinka is playing for the Czech Republic at the World Junior A Challenge and Senna Peeters is at the world junior group B tournament. Defenceman Justin Barron is also out indefinitely with a blood clot.
The Mooseheads called up Kyle Petten, Landon Miron and Bryan Laureigh to fill out their roster.
"The guys that came up all played well," Daigneault said. "Miron and Laureigh are big kids and they protect the puck well so they were able to play well down low and make some offensive plays. Kyle Petten's a kid that has a lot of speed but also has very good poise with the puck. He was able to make some good breakouts and contribute offensively. I'm very pleased with the guys that were brought up but also our young players who are already here. They all brought their A game."
Maxim Trepanier scored twice to extend his points streak to 16 games (26 points) and Jeff Burridge and Zack Jones also found the net for the Mooseheads. Patty Kyte chipped in three assists. Brett Budgell had the Islanders goal.
Alexis Gravel made 47 saves for Halifax and Jacob Goobie stopped 23 shots for Charlottetown.
"Gravy was spectacular in net," Daigneault said. "They're a team that likes to put a lot of pucks on net and out of their 48 shots they obviously got some scoring chances but it's not like they were really dominant.
"But when there were saves that needed to be made on the PK and on breakdowns, Gravy was there to make them."
The Mooseheads (15-13-2-1) play their final home game of the first half on Friday against the Islanders (18-12-4-0). Their last game before the Christmas break is on Saturday on the road against the Saint John Sea Dogs.
"After seeing tonight's game, I'm confident that the kids that we brought in can play the right way and not just fill up a hole," Daigneault said. "What I wanted to see tonight was not guys being in the dressing room and looking around to see who was going to step up. I wanted guys to go out there and take charge, be proactive, play your best game and make every shift your best shift. Everybody got the opportunity and they will again in our next games too."
Titan 5, Eagles 1: In Bathurst, Shawn Element and Remy Anglehart each had a pair of goals and Anderson MacDonald finished with three assists in the upset.
Bennett MacArthur also scored for the Titan and Tristan Berube made 29 saves. Brooklyn Kalmikov had the Cape Breton goal and Kevin Mandolese stopped 32 shots.
