PICTOU - Jeff MacLeod led the Pictou Academy grad class Thursday night as the gold medalist of 2007.
MacLeod took home the Town of Pictou Gold Medal, Governor General Medal and Tupper Gold Medal.
He won many other awards, including the Ian Weisner Memorial Trophy, Ethel A. Harris Scholarship, Rev. A.A. Smith Scholarship, C.B. Robinson Prize, Fisher Bursary, Clarence "Dave" Wong Memorial Bursary, Chester and Barb Roach Memorial Scholarship and George A. Macleod Memorial Scholarship. MacLeod also received the Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital Foundation Health and Wellness Scholarship, United Commercial Travellers Pictonian Council #879 Bursary, Stephen Russell Memorial Prize, a $2,000 Michelin Bursary and a $1,500 science fair scholarship.
He won prizes for having the highest marks in physics 12, pre-calculus math 12 and GGS 12 and the second-highest marks in chemistry 12 and biology 12.
MacLeod was offered a $3,000 entrance scholarship by Dalhousie University and scholarships totalling $8,000 by St. Francis Xavier University.
Karleigh Turnbull was the silver medalist with the second-highest academic standing in the grad class. She won the Queen Elizabeth II Medal for superior academic achievement and school and community involvement during her three years in high school.
Turnbull's many awards included a Maude Sutherland Bursary, Donald Blenkhorne Bursary, Robert and Catherine Ross Memorial Bursary, Fisher Bursary, Heighton Memorial Bursary and George A. Macleod Memorial Scholarship. She also received a Fraser and Hoyt Good Citizenship Award, Pfizer Canada prize and $1,000 Tim Hortons scholarship.
Turnbull won prizes for having the highest standing for a female in English 12 and the second-highest marks in advanced math 12, physics 12, pre-calculus math 12, GGS 12 and biology 12.
She received scholarship offers from St. FX University ($1,000 and a merit scholarship totalling $12,000), Western University ($1,500), Dalhousie University ($2,000 scholarship and $3,000 entrance scholarship) and University of British Columbia ($2,000).
Another top graduate in the 2007 class was Susan McKinnon, who won the Kevin Gillis Memorial Award, W.T. Ferguson Bursary, MacKenzie Prize and Heighton Memorial Bursary. McKinnon also received the George A. Macleod Memorial Scholarship, Monarchist League of Canada Northumberland Branch Prize, RBC Foundation Bursary, No More Westrays Bursary and prize for the highest mark in law 12. She received a $1,000 science fair scholarship offer from Saint Mary's University and a $2,500 entrance scholarship offer from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College.
