The 25-year-old placed third overall and first in his age division with a time of 4:32.4.
The 1/2 Ironman event consists of a 1,900-metre swim, a 90k bike and a 21.1 km run. After coming out of the water in 59th place, MacDonald was able to work his way up to third overall in just his third 1/2 Ironman event. The win secures him a spot in the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Nice, France which will take place in September 2019. The two-time reigning Champion at the Melmerby Triathlon at the Olympic distance is only in his third season of competing in triathlon.
