PORT HOOD, N.S.

A missed chance here, a hit post there.

The Fundy Highland Midget AA Subway Selects didn’t get enough breaks playing at provincials this past weekend, going 1-1-2 and missing out on getting a spot in the championship game.

The Midget AAs tied both games to open the tournament in Port Hood, Cape Breton; Madison Sample had the only Select’s goal in a 1-1 final against host Cape Breton West, then the Selects skated to a 0-0 draw with Metro East Inferno, with Kelly Hartnett getting the shutout between the pipes.

Fundy Highland then dropped a 2-0 decision to Metro West Force, before finishing up the round robin with a 3-1 victory over the Colchester Cyclones. Kenzie Els had two goals for the winners and Hayley Nichol also scored.

“It was a good weekend, the girls played hard but we played those two ties and that’s what put us out of it,” head coach Trevor Foley said.

“We struggled getting goals on our side. We couldn’t finish, but that happens in hockey.”

Metro East Inferno defeated Cape Breton West in the champion game. Those teams had finished in third and fourth place in the league standings during the regular season.

“It just shows that anything can happen in the playoffs and at provincials,” Foley said.
