WESTVILLE ROAD, N.S.

The Northern AAA Subway Selects have taken a 2-0 lead in the best of five Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League (NSFMHL) final series.

The Selects earned a tough 5-4 win over the Station Six Fire on Saturday before eking out a 2-1 victory on Sunday to take the series lead. Natalie MacKay, Ella Maclean, Taylor Long, KJ Emery and Landyn Pitts, with the winner, scored for the Selects on Saturday. Cassie Clarke and Ashley Livingston did the damage for Northern on Sunday.

Kristen MacNeil was stellar between the pipes in both wins.

Game 3 goes in Halifax on Friday and the Selects expect an extremely tough pushback from the Fire.

“If game two is any indication, it will be a bruiser on Friday,” said coach Craig Clarke.

“Today was about the most physical game we’ve been involved in all year and we know Station Six will be coming hard in their own barn with the crowd in their favour. We were a bit flat in the opener on Saturday but got some goals when we needed them.”

Sunday’s game was marked by some physical play.

“(Sunday), they came at us hard and I was pleased with the complete level of our players. They pushed back and didn’t shy away from the physical play,” added coach Ron Turnbull.

The winner of the series will be named provincial champion and earn the right to represent Nova Scotia at Atlantics, to take place in Bathurst, N.B. in late March.

The Atlantic winner will go on to play at the Esso Cup, the National Women’s midget championship, in Sudbury at the end of April.
