A 25-year-old Pictou County man died in a fatal crash on Highway 104 Wednesday morning after a car collided with a logging truck.

Mounties say the collision happened shortly after 5 a.m. just past the on-ramp at Exit 26.

The car, driven by the deceased, was headed towards Cape Breton when it veered over the centre lane and struck a logging truck going towards New Glasgow head-on.

The tractor trailer overturned, ending up in a ditch beside the sign advertising Stellarton 24, and caught on fire.

Firefighters from Thorburn, Plyouth and New Glasgow were all called to the scene.

The male operator of the logging truck was rescued from the cab and taken to hospital in New Glasgow for treatment of his injuries.

Highway 104 was closed between exits 25 and 26 and Mounties expected it to remain closed for a good portion of the day while an accident reconstructionist worked on the scene. Detours are in place.
