Scotians swept in series with Bulldogs

TRENTON, N.S. – The Pictou County Scotians are likely glad to see the Christmas break.

The Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League team dropped its fourth straight game Sunday in Trenton, where they took an 8-0 beating at the hands of the Antigonish Bulldogs.

Devin MacLaughlin had a hat trick to pace the ’Dogs, who took both ends of a home-and-home series with Pictou County.

The Scotians (11-8) ended the calendar year in a tie with the Glace Bay Miners for third place, after the Bulldogs jumped over them in the Sid Rowe Division standings.

Friday at Antigonish Arena, two goals in the final 13 minutes of the third period gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 win. Andrew Boyle and Kurt MacLaughlin scored in the third to help the Bulldogs overcome a 3-2 Scotians’ lead. Jacob Pentz, Will Kelly and Ian Keating had goals for Pictou County.

Weeks AAAs sweep Cape Breton West

WESTVILLE ROAD, N.S. – The Pictou County Weeks Major Midgets took two games form the Cape Breton Tradesmen this past weekend in Nova Scotia Major Midget AAA Hockey League action.

On Sunday, Blake Kontuk had two goals and two assists and Jacob Melanson also counted a pair of goals as Weeks beat the Tradesmen 6-4.

Ben Fraser and Evan Tilley contributed single markers, and JMelanson had three assists.

Saturday in Cape Breton, Sam Archibald scored twice, Melanson had a goal and two assists and Fraser also had a goal in a 4-3 Weeks victory. Kontuk picked up two assists in the win.

Peewee A Crushers remain undefeated

NEW GLASGOW, N.S. – The Pictou County Peewee A Crushers hockey club stayed undefeated on the season, with a sweep of the Antigonish Bulldogs last weekend.

On Sunday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre, the Crushers blanked the Bulldogs 10-0, with Noah Larade-MacDonald picking up the shutout. Scoring for the Crushers were Griffin Horton (4), Harley Clark (2), Cole Bryden (2), Chris Jorden (1) and Cameron Pitts (1). Assists went to Jack MacNeil (2), Cole Miller (2), Horton (2), Bryden (2), Kaleb MacEachern (2) and Jorden, Blake Misener, Ryan Galway, and Caden Hawes with one helper each.

On Saturday in Antigonish, the Crushers defeated the Bulldogs 8-1.

Austin Swain got the win in nets for the Crushers. Scoring for the Crushers were Jorden (3), Bryden, Galway, Horton, MacNeil and Leland Tobin with one each. Assists went to Bryden (3), Horton (1), Ethan Barker (1), Cameron Pitts (1) and Cole Miller (1). The Crushers will face Truro this weekend in league action.

Atom AA Selects get two weekend ties

TRENTON, N.S. – The Subway Selects picked up two points in two games against Metro Force Red this past weekend in Atom AA girls hockey action.

The first game was held at the BMO Centre in Halifax on Saturday that ended with a 1-1 tie. Scoring the lone goal early in the first was Sophie Hatchard, with assists by Chloe Ferguson and Delaney Dean. The second game was held in Trenton on Sunday, with the teams skating to a scoerless draw. Kenli Ross got the shutout, facing 34 shots.

Peewee AA Selects collect two wins

PICTOU, N.S. – The Peewee AA Subway Selects had a great weekend of hockey; walking away with two wins.

Saturdays game against Metro East Inferno in Lantz was a 2-1 win, with Selects goals by Sidney Keay; unassisted, and Sophie Forward from Chloe Garcia.

Sunday’s game against Metro West Red in Pictou was a 3-0 shutout for goalie Caitlin Cleary. Garcia had two goals and Alexis Tulloch had the other, while Lily Leblanc and Reese Murray had assists.

Bantam AA Selects improve to 9-1-1

WESTVILLE ROAD, N.S. – The Fundy Highland Bantam AA Selects improved their provincial league hockey record to 9-1-1 on the season with three victories over the weekend.

The Selects swept a doubleheader from the Cape Breton Blizzard on Saturday. The first game saw Olivia Fitt score once and add an assist in a 3-0 win. Josie Dunn and Baillie Griffon added single markers with assists provided by Willa Evans, Kenzie Greencorn and Bree MacPherson. Gabby Arsenault recorded the shutout.

The second game saw Greencorn lead the way offensively with a goal and assist as the Selects shaded the Blizzard 2-1. Megan Smith also scored with assists awarded to Ava Gennoe and Jaylen Langille.

Sunday, the Selects blanked Metro East Inferno Black 3-0.

Langille led the way with two goals – including the game winner – and the other on the power play. Erin MacNeil provided the insurance goal. Evans picked up a lone assist in the contest. Arsenault got credit for the shutout.

Bantam A girls get two wins

PICTOU, N.S. – The Fundy Highland bantam A female hockey team travelled to Halifax on Saturday where they defeated Metro West Force Red 1-0.

Scoring for Fundy was Raleigh MacDonald, assisted by Maggie MacLean. Earning the shutout was Myah Ernst.

In their home game on Sunday, they defeated Metro East Inferno Red 6-3.

Scoring for Fundy were Olivia Marks, with a hat trick, Camryn Wrigh,t with two, and MacDonald. Assists by Natasha Hahn, Mallory Sangster, Jessa MacKeil, MacDonald and Marks. Playing in nets was Kylee Alexander.

MacKay, Maloney pace Steelers’ win

TRENTON, N.S. – The Trenton Peewee C Steelers hockey team defeated the Stellarton Royals 5-1 on Dec. 11.

Leading the Steelers were Ethan MacKay and Jake Maloney, with two goals each, and Seth Francis adding a single. Assist went to Brett Butler. Stellarton’s goal came from Logan Canning, unassisted.

Winning goalie was Derrick MacKay.

The Steelers next game is Dec. 17, when they take on the New Glasgow Bombers at 7 p.m.
