Mariposa skaters make Canada Games team

WESTVILLE ROAD, N.S. – Three Pictou County skaters will compete at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in February.

Mariposa East skaters Brooke Pennington (pre-novice women), Cameron Boulter (pre-novice men) and Jailyn Elliott (pre-novice dance) will all make the trip to Red Deer, Alta. in February for Games. 

The skaters have qualified by competing at Skate Canada Nova Scotia Sectionals and the Skate Canada Challenge.

Scotians set to play twice against Bulldogs

TRENTON, N.S. – The Strait Pirates showed the Pictou County Scotians they still have some work to do.

The Scotians, who had won six of seven games, were swept in a Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League home-and-home set with Strait this past weekend; they were overwhelmed by a 9-1 margin on Nov. 30 in Port Hawkesbury (Jeremy McFarlane had the only goal for Pictou County), then two nights later at Trenton arena, the Pirates beat them 4-1.

Logan Vande Meerakker scored for the lone goal for Pictou County after the Pirates had built a 4-0 lead.

Pictou County plays the Antigonish Bulldogs this coming weekend before the league takes a break until January. Pictou County is at Antigonish on Friday, then hosts the Bulldogs Sunday night in Trenton at 6 p.m.

The Scotians (11-6) are in second place in the Sid Rowe Division with 22 points, two ahead of both Antigonish and the Glace Bay Miners, and 11 points back of the front-running Pirates (16-1-1).

Volleyball Open House scheduled for Thursday

STELLARTON, N.S. – The Pictou County Invasion Volleyball Club will be hosting an open house for interested players on Dec. 6.

It will be from 5 to 7 p.m. and will take place at the Nova Scotia Community College campus in Stellarton.

Peewee A Crushers win two from West Colchester

THORBURN, N.S. – The Peewee A Crushers defeated West Colchester in both of their minor hockey games last weekend.

On Saturday in Thorburn, they skated away with a 6–2 win. Scoring for the Crushers were Griffin Horton (2), Jack MacNeil (2), Cole Bryden and Thomas Hillier. Assists went to Caden Hawes, Blake Misener and Ethan Barker. Austin Swain recorded the win.

On Sunday in Debert, the Crushers ran into a goaltenders’ duel in a back-and-forth contest. The Crushers pulled ahead on the power play late in the game to go ahead 3–2, then with a Crusher in the penalty box, West Colchester pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker but to no avail as Bryden grabbed a loose puck and buried it into the open net for his second goal of the game. Also scoring for the Crushers were Griffin Horton and Blake Misener with assists coming off the sticks of Leland Tobin and Chris Jorden. Noah Larade-MacDonald played a strong game between the pipes for the Crushers.

The Crushers play Antigonish in a home-and-home series next weekend.

Bantam A Crushers get win in Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, N.S. – The Pictou County Crushers Bantam A Crushers defeated South shore Lumberjacks 2-1 on Dec. 2 in Bridgewater.

Dawson MacKay tied the game for the Crushers in the second period with a rebound of a shot from defenceman Braden MacKinnon. With 1:34 remaining in the third period, the Crushers Jake Henderson beat the Lumberjacks goalie to seal the win.

Winning goalie was Chloe Stroud.

Peewee AAA Crushers erupt offensively

WESTVILLE ROAD, N.S. – The Pictou County Peewee AAA Crushers hockey team proved to be too much for the Acadia Axemen in a home-and-home series this past weekend.

On Saturday in Acadia, the Crushers beat the Axemen 13-1. Scoring for the Crushers were Levon Walst, with a hat trick, Ben Marchand, Keagan Dalton and Lane Sim, with two each, Kaden Smith, Landon Steele, Dominic MacKenzie and Wyatt Spence. Assists went to Kingsley Austin (3), Cade Moser (3), Owen Conrad (2), Dalton (2), Lane Sim, Ben Manos, Steele, Clint MacLaughlin, Marchand, Walst and Amias Crossman.

On Sunday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre, the Crushers won 9-0.

Scoring for the Crushers were Dalton, with three, MacLaughlin had a pair and singles from Crossman, Walst, Moser, Steele. Assists went to Walst (3), Dalton (2), singles from Crossman, Spence, Steele, MacLaughlin, Austin, Sim and Manos.

Alex Palmer was rock-solid in nets, recording the shutout.

The Crushers currently sit in second place in the Mainland league with an 8-2-1 record.

The Crushers next see action Dec. 6 in Dartmouth at the SDEMA tournament.

Bantam AA Crushers sweep Bulldogs

PICTOU, N.S. – The Pictou County Crushers swept the Antigonish Bulldogs in a bantam AA hockey home-and-home series this past weekend.

Saturday in Pictou, the Crushers defeated the Bulldogs 7-3. Logan Crosby led all scorers with a hat trick, while Lane Lochead collected a pair of goals. Singles went to Camden Kelly and Reese Smith and assists went to Lochead (4), Smith (3), Crosby and Brent Chapman. Evan Ramsey picked up the win in goal.

In Game 2 on Sunday in Antigonish, Pictou County edged the Bulldogs 5-3.

Cole Battist was solid in the Crushers net to pick up the win. Jayden Duplessis and Cory MacGillivray each scored two goals with a single marker going to Lochead. Assists went to Eastyn Cameron (2), Reese Smith (2), Lochead, Crosby, and MacGillivray.

This weekend, the Crushers travel to South Shore for two league games.

Bantam A female collect pair of wins

WESTVILLE ROAD, N.S. –The Fundy Highland Bantam A female hockey team won both of their regular league games last weekend.

On Saturday, they travelled to Halifax to defeat Metro West Force White Team 5-0. Scoring for Fundy were Jessa MacKeil (2), Alyssa Ells, Mallory Sangster and Olivia Marks. Assists went to MacKeil, Ells, Frankie Hayman and Camryn Wright. Myah Ernst had the shutout in nets.

On Sunday in their home game, they defeated Metro West Force Red 7-3. Scoring for Fundy was Olivia Marks with a hat trick, Camryn Wright (2), Ells and Ashleyn Bona. Assists by MacKeil, Frankie Cameron, Lucia Mason, Camryn Wright, Ells, Sangster, Taylor Toole and Marks. Kylie Alexander was in nets.

Bantam AA Selects get 4-1 win over Wild

WESTVILLE ROAD, N.S. – The Fundy Highland Bantam AA Subway Selects improved their Provincial Bantam AA Hockey League record to 6-1-1 with a 4-0 win over Valley Wild.

Megan Smith, Maddie Beson, Jaylen Langille and Emily Hart all scored for the Selects and Gabby Arsenault provided the shutout.

The Selects host a doubleheader Saturday vs. Cape Breton Blizzard. The games will be played at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.

Maripacs, Steelers tie 2-2 in peewee C action

TRENTON, N.S. – The Trenton Steelers and Pictou Maripacs battled to a 2-2 tie in peewee C hockey action on Monday.

The Maripacs took a two-goal lead, with both goals scored by Shawn Rushton, assisted by Jack Beaton and Blake Hensbee. The Steelers bounced back with two goals of their own scored by Brett Butler and Seth Francis, with assists to Landon Martin and Ethan MacKay.

On Tuesday, the Steelers remained undefeated with a win an 8-2 win over the Bombers. Jake Maloney led the Steelers with a hat trick, while Ethan MacKay and Seth Francis each had two goals and Landon Martin added a single. Assists went to MacKay, Ross Swinamer, Derrick MacKay, Cole MacGregor, Brett Butler and Martin.

New Glasgow’s goals came from Maddux MacKenzie and Mason MacEwan, both unassisted.

The winning goalie was Caden MacDonald.
