NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. — The Northside and District Minor Hockey Association board of directors released a statement Friday morning regarding recent allegations of racial comments surrounding members of its association.

“We take these allegations very seriously and are co-operating with Hockey Nova Scotia’s independent investigation,” reads the statement.

“Our association strives to provide a safe and supportive place for all hockey players to flourish, not only as athletes, but as people. Racism has no place in our arenas or society.”

Logan Prosper, an Indigenous hockey player from Whycocomagh, says he was the target of racial slurs during a midget ‘A’ game between the Cape Breton West Islanders and Northside Vikings in Cheticamp last Sunday.

The 16-year-old forward, who plays for the Islanders, alleges opposing players began using racial slurs towards him midway through the second period of the game, and later continued in the third period.

Prosper alleges in the third period fans from the opposing team also began hurling racial slurs towards him.

Hockey Nova Scotia is investigating the incident and met with the Prosper family on Thursday.
