WESTVILLE ROAD – The Northern AAA Subway Selects continue to roll, with two more wins this weekend over the Chevy Panthers of Cape Breton.
On Saturday, the Selects played host to the Panthers, who were defeated by the Selects last weekend in the semifinal of the Subway Cup.
The Subways knew they would get a strong push from the Panthers looking to avenge the loss. Northern opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by Lindsey Smith and the Selects took a 2-0 lead in the second on a rebound by Eva Wornell.
The Panthers closed the gap to 2-1 before Wornell scored her second on a beautiful feed from behind the net into the slot. The Panthers would get one more but that was as close as they would get as Erin Sullivan shut the door in goal for the 3-2 win.
The Selects travelled to Cape Breton on Sunday and came away with a convincing 4-1 win. Wornell, Natalie MacKay, Mariah Linehan and Landyn Pitts, with an empty netter, scored for the Subways. Kristen Macneil was strong in goal in the victory.
The Selects host a two-game series next weekend against the Fundy Nationals from Saint John, N.B.
On Saturday, the Selects will host a special celebration evening where they will recognize last year’s provincial and Atlantic champion Northern Selects, as well as, the founders, builders and visionaries of the Subway Select female hockey program.
The Subway program provided the foundation for the Northern Selects to develop over the years culminating in an appearance at last year’s Esso Cup national championships. There will be giveaways, a female novice game between periods and a visit from the Subway Monkey. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Pictou County Wellness Center.
