BRIDGEWATER, N.S. – The Northern Subway Selects couldn’t mount another comeback.

The Selects lost 4-2 to Quebec’s Pionnières de Lanaudière on Tuesday at the Esso Cup, the AAA Midget female national championship tournament being played in Bridgewater.

Head coach Troy Reid said he feels like his club has held their own in terms of territorial play, but they often pay the price when they have a breakdown.

“The teams here, the level they’re at, they expose you when you make a mistake,” he said after the game.

As they had on Monday against the Brampton Canettes, the Selects found themselves down 4-1 in the third period. A goal by Eva Wornell – assisted by her sister Sophia Wornell as well as Ella MacLean – got the Selects closer, but the Quebec representative would hold on to claim the victory despite being outshot 34-28, with the Selects getting 18 shots on goal in the final period in the unsuccessful comeback bid.

Kara MacLean also scored a goal against Quebec, with the assist going to Lindsey Smith. MacLean has three goals and two assists in the three games that her team has played thus far, while Eva Wornell has scored twice and set up two others.

With a record of 1-1-1, the Selects still have a chance to advance to the medal round, but need at least one more win or must rely on help from other teams.

It’s not an easy way for a hockey team to live, when they fall behind and find themselves starting to chase the game.

“If you dig yourself a hole, getting down two or three goals, it’s tough to come back from that,” Reid said, adding that he’s still pleased with how his team has performed on the national stage. “I’m as proud as a peacock right now, when it comes to our effort.”

In their Monday game against Brampton, the Selects had rallied to tie the game in the final two minutes, before eventually losing 5-4 in a shootout.

The Northern Selects will play on Wednesday morning, an 11 a.m. game against St. Albert Slash.
