WESTVILLE ROAD – On May 27, the YMCA Tri Club is aiming to introduce 12 and under youth to the Tri-sport at its third ‘Y Not Tri’ Indoor Triathlon.

The Indoor Triathlon was started in 2016 by volunteers to gain more interest in the sport while focusing on fun and promoting active living in Pictou County. It’s designed for people with little or no experience. With shorter distances and no open water swim, it’s a good introduction to the sport – for an adult, a teen or a youngster still learning how to tie their shoes.

“It is a great event and sport for youth, as it needs relatively little equipment. It is also equipment that most kids have, such as: sneakers, a bike, a helmet, and a swim suit,” said event organizer Kathy Saulnier.

“It is a goal of ours to create a fun atmosphere that gets kids excited about being active and to expose families to a sport that they can do together.”

With the adult division of the local Tri sold out four weeks before the event, organizers are focusing their attention on getting more kids involved. The morning will start with youth 12 years old and under.

There are three divisions being offered for youth.

Participants will start in the pool and once the swim portion is complete, they will exit the Y and mount their own bicycles for a course in the parking area. This will be followed by a run.

There is no fee for youth to take part, however, online registration is recommended. Participants will be awarded an event T-shirt and bib to remember the accomplishment.
