TRENTON – Trenton Mayor Shannon MacInnis presented a letter of commendation to the Albion Boxing Club this week on behalf of the town.
“They provide a good service to the community, and we’re proud to have them as part of our town,” MacInnis said, as he and his fellow council formally acknowledged the 30th anniversary of the club on behalf of the town’s citizens.
A total of 27 of those 30 years have been spent in Trenton.
“It gives kids a place to go, keeps them off the street and out of trouble,” MacInnis said.
“It teaches them good values and it’s a great place for the community.”
Club president Jim Worthen said the Town of Trenton plays a key role in helping the Albion club remain on firm footing.
“We would not be able to do all the positive things we do without a good building to operate in,” Worthen said.
“The town provides us a space to train at a very reasonable rent (and) we could not be any more happy.”
The club is celebrating its 30th year in style; head coach Al Archibald was named Boxing Nova Scotia’s coach of the year in early March and 16-year-old Matt Fraser won a national title less than two weeks ago in Edmonton, boxing in the 49k division.
It was the 11th time that an Albion Boxing Club fighter has won a gold medal at the Canadian boxing championships.
“It’s been a great thirtieth season – Al getting coach of the year and bringing home a gold medal from nationals two weeks ago,” Worthen added.
The Albion club will also help celebrate the milestone year with a boxing card on May 12, which will take place at Summer Street Industries in New Glasgow. The Albion club usually has little trouble selling out the roughly 300-seat facility.
