BMW Vision iNext concept SUV is BMW’s electric, autonomous future

NEW YORK — The BMW Vision iNext concept is a winning bingo card of auto industry buzzwords. It is also our best look yet at the future of the German luxury brand.

Is it electric? Yes. Is it autonomous? You bet. Does it have artificial intelligence? Big time.

A production version will appear in showrooms in 2021, as an all-electric, level-3, semi-autonomous SUV from BMW’s “i” brand.

“This is our vision of future mobility,” said Klaus Froehlich, BMW board member responsible for research and development. “It integrates all our strategies… and is also motivating our company and people.”

In the belly of a Lufthansa 777 cargo plane on the tarmac at John F. Kennedy airport in New York, Froehlich stepped aside, and the iNext concept was revealed on a turntable inside the plane.

Before its public unveiling at the recent Los Angeles auto show, the iNext made a globe-trotting debut, landing in four cities in five days, as the 777 flies from Munich, to New York, to San Francisco and finally to Beijing.

Consider the Vision iNext concept as a kind of North Star for BMW; something it may never actually get to, but something it is working toward.

It comes amidst a barrage of all-electric SUV announcements. Mercedes unveiled the EQC; Audi unveiled its E-tron — both of which are slated for production in 2019 — and Ford showed a sketch of an as-yet unnamed all-electric ’ute scheduled to arrive in 2020.

Exactly what kind of experience drivers can expect from BMW’s SUV-esque iNext when it lands in showrooms in 2021 remains unclear.

BMW’s fifth-generation electric drivetrain will provide a range of more than 600 kilometres (on the somewhat optimistic WLTP test-cycle) and go from 0-60 mph in less than four-seconds, Froehlich said.

Electro-mobility is the “new normal,” he added. BMW has been working on modern electric drivetrains since 2004. “Everybody said it’s nonsense, it’s too expensive, it’s not mature — but we have (now) developed five generations.” Other upcoming all-electric models from the company include the 2019 Mini Electric and 2020 BMW X3.

Last year, BMW sold more than 100,000 electric and hybrid vehicles. By the end of the decade, Froehlich expects the company will have sold more than 500,000.

Conditional autonomy

If electric power is the new normal, autonomous driving is anything but.

The iNext will be — if regulations allow — the first BMW with a level 3 (conditionally-autonomous) system, meaning the car could take over driving responsibility in certain circumstances, with the expectation that a human driver would be able to take over on short notice.

“My premise is yes, BMW will be responsible,” Froehlich said. If a crash occurs while the car is in autonomous mode, the company will take responsibility.

“Everybody looks at all the Audis and Teslas and GMs and such. Our level 3 will be much beyond that, not only in performance but also in reliability. We’re working very hard so that it works when it’s foggy, when it’s snowing,” Froehlich said. The sensors would be self-cleaning, so they don’t get blinded by falling snow, for example.

Taking a jab at Tesla, he added, “We will not give beta releases to the customer. You will not be part of an experiment, you can be sure.”

“The challenges to overcome in autonomous driving are enormous, and the availability, especially of level 4 or 5 (vehicles), will strongly depend on legal and regulatory premises.”

Speaking about the regulatory landscape, he said, “In Europe it’s much too slow; in America I see some anarchy honestly.”

New design

BMW’s attempt at cramming all future mobility concepts into a single car does at least seem more appealing than some of the pod-like, shipping-container style concepts we’ve seen from other companies.

In person, the iNext appears somewhere between an X3 and X5 in overall size. The batteries are slung low, under the floor. There’s a huge amount of glass, especially on the sides where a low beltline makes for a beautifully airy interior. It’s a cab-forward shape, but not as extreme as Jaguar’s I-Pace.

The exterior design language is new, less fussy and cleaner than the brand’s current models. It’s certainly a big step in the right direction for a design department that has seemed slightly aimless recently.

The only confounding design element is the prominent bucktooth grille. It’s an evolution of BMW’s traditional kidney grille and harkens back to the upright shape seen on the 1936 328 Roadster. The expansive new grille hides an array of sensors required for autonomous driving.

However, the company’s top designer, Adrian van Hooydonk, assured us that this was not necessarily the new face of BMW.

“It’s not decided yet…. We’ll stick with the BMW kidney grille for now and then we’ll see about the future; this is just a first idea.”

Unlike the existing i3 and i8, the iNext will not use carbon-fibre-reinforced-plastic for the entire passenger compartment, instead using more traditional automotive manufacturing methods.

As for the interior, it is the most ambitious and futuristic aspect of the car, and therefore also the least likely to make it into production. BMW continues to experiment with new types of user interfaces.

To the holographic displays, gesture controls, and touch screens the brand is already working on, the iNext adds an overhead projector that displays a virtual interface, a light-up jacquard fabric on the seats which you can trace your finger over to summon a radio station, and natural voice recognition powered by some kind of artificial intelligence.

A built-in 5G cellular data connection should allow, for example, streaming high-quality video from Netflix into the car while it autonomously navigates a highway traffic jam.

Both Klaus Froehlich and Adrian van Hooydonk were confident that what they’ve shown here inside the 777 cargo plane will be quite similar to what you’ll be able to buy in showrooms in 2021.

But many crucial details regarding just how autonomous and intelligent it will be — or is allowed to be — are still missing. It is those details that will make all the difference in a market suddenly inundated with supposedly game-changing, disruptive and buzz-worthy vehicles.
